Southeast Asia is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve returned home. It’s a vibrant mix of cultures, flavors, and breathtaking landscapes that make every journey feel like an adventure. From the bustling streets of Bangkok to the peaceful waters of the Mekong, there’s something for everyone—especially if you love a touch of luxury with your exploration.
One of our favorite experiences was cruising the Mekong River with AmaWaterways. There’s something special about gliding past floating villages, watching life unfold along the riverbanks, and stepping off the boat to explore golden temples and colorful markets. The service onboard was impeccable, the cuisine was phenomenal, and each stop along the way—whether it was Phnom Penh’s regal palaces or the remote silk-weaving villages of Cambodia—offered a deeper connection to the region’s history and culture. Watching the sun set over the Mekong with a cocktail in hand? Absolutely unforgettable.
Of course, Vietnam is full of incredible experiences beyond the river. Our time in Hanoi was a perfect blend of old and new. We wandered through the chaotic yet charming streets of the Old Quarter, sampled some of the best pho and banh mi we’ve ever had, and marveled at the quiet beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake. And then there was Ha Long Bay—truly a sight to behold. Cruising through the emerald waters, weaving between towering limestone karsts, and exploring hidden caves felt like stepping into a dream. Waking up to mist rolling over the bay was one of those travel moments that takes your breath away.
Cambodia is a country of contrasts—stunning beauty and deep history intertwined. Angkor Wat is one of those places that exceeds every expectation. Seeing the sunrise over the temple complex was breathtaking, but having a private tour guide share hidden corners and stories made it even more special. Beyond the ancient ruins, Phnom Penh offers a glimpse into Cambodia’s more recent past. A visit to the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is sobering but essential to understanding the resilience and spirit of the Cambodian people. After such an emotional experience, the city offers moments of lightness too—like sipping cocktails at a rooftop bar high above the Mekong, watching the lights of Phnom Penh twinkle as the city hums below.
Thailand, always a favorite, offers a mix of energy and serenity. We didn’t make it there on this trip- but you can! Visit the dazzling Grand Palace, admire the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and take a longtail boat ride along the Chao Phraya River to discover hidden canals and floating markets. Then there’s Chiang Mai, a lush retreat where you can spend time with elephants at an ethical sanctuary and take a hands-on Thai cooking class (which, let’s be honest, will make you feel like pros for a day). To top it all off, a few days in Phuket means beachfront villas, indulgent spa treatments, and sailing across the Andaman Sea at sunset.
Southeast Asia isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to experience. It’s the scent of street food sizzling on a grill, the warm smiles of locals, and the feeling of stepping into a world where ancient traditions and modern luxuries coexist beautifully. Whether you’re exploring by boat, wandering through ancient temples, or simply watching the world go by from a quiet riverside café, every moment here feels like a story worth telling.
Some places make you feel like a traveler, but Southeast Asia makes you feel like a part of something bigger. Let its magic unfold before you, and may your adventures lead you to moments that stay with you forever.
